L3-37 - Last Shot

Description

Well this is something new, very new in fact. I've been a Star Wars fan for about 14 years now, and in all these years not a single thing in the franchise has ever really stuck out to me as something I can really point to and call my absolute favorite thing in it. I've never really disliked anything in it either, so its always been a casual passion of mine. However, this year I can officially say that I have an absolute favorite Star Wars character, and here she is.

People who have seen the film Solo: A Star Wars Story will recognise this character as L3, the equal rights activist robot. I will say first of all that the movie DOES NOT do her justice at all, and what do I mean by that? The quote above her comes from the novel Last Shot: A Han and Lando Novel, which I finished listening to the audio book of today. All I can say is I really feel for L3, and that quote really says it all. In Star Wars, one of my biggest issues was that basically all the interesting characters were organics - droids were little more than tools for humans, and whilst I've never been particularly offended by this, my love of artificial intelligence characters in cyberpunk has always made me wish there could be more interesting and likeable artificial characters as well as just organics. I mean, R2-D2 and C-3PO are fun characters yes, but they're just simple comic relief, and are still tied to their purposes of translation and starship repair, no matter how much personality they may display outside of their roles in droid society. L3 however is a droid who is not only completely independent, but to me she is absolutely inspiring. Again, read the quote above. I had to draw her at least once after finishing the book. Part of me wants to see her in more Star Wars media, but to be honest I feel the same way about her as many Star Wars films felt about the force, I don't need to know where she came from or where she got her independence, just that she has it, and used it to save the entire galaxy in the events of the book.

As for the angel wings, its a bit of a reference to a scene in the book where a robot of her exact same make rescues him from a certain death situation, and with him falling unconscious, she believes she is taking him to heaven. I know its more than a little silly, but seeing as she's not exactly the most expressive of characters, it helps get across my thoughts toward her. I know many people will disagree with me about her, mostly those who have seen the film, but hey that's nothing new to me. Almost everything I find myself really liking are stuff others either don't care about, don't like or don't know about, so whatever. I hope some people like her as much as I do though.
